What the Writers Are Saying

Happy Wednesday! In honor of hump day, I bring you links to words of wisdom from several writers, on writing, on love, and on the existence of magic. Enjoy!

Nalini Singh on her Guild Hunter series – Morgan Doremus interviews Nalini for RT Book Reviews, discussing the Guild Hunter books as a whole and the latest release, ARCHANGEL’S BLADE, in particular.

Janet Fitch’s 10 Rules for Writers – The author of White Oleander and Paint It Black shares her tips for writing. As with any such list, your mileage may vary, but this is a pretty sensible list to keep in mind.

An Interview with Erin Morgenstern – Morgenstern’s debut novel, The Night Circus, is getting tons of buzz this fall, and her interview looks not just at the book itself, but at how she got from her first draft (done for NaNoWriMo) to where she is now.

  1. Nice interview with Nalini and she looks lovely in person. Hopefully her new novel with Dimitri will do well. Some of her readers were surprised that she picked Dimitiri as the MC. She’s a prolific writer. Tell her that she’ll welcome to come to Canada and sign her books. Janet’s 10 rules are useful, except the last one. I don’t get why we have to torture the MC in our novel. I’m too nice to do it. So, it’s not for me. Erin’s story is very interesting. I read about her in the Wall Street Journal August 18, pages D1-2, where they analyzed the future for YA fiction. Nephele, you might wish to read it if you represent YA fiction. Their main idea was that YA novels combining magical elements (Harry Potter) and forbidden love (Twilight) will do very well. I re-arranged my query and storyline for my YA fiction to follow their suggestion, and still waiting to see if they are right. But very nice story about Erin and how many changes she made before finding the right storyline with the help of her agent, and now she’s hot.
