Cory Doctorow on the Shape of Stories

Author Cory Doctorow shares his lecture on the Shape of Stories at the July 2013 Clarion Writer’s Workshop held at UC San Diego. Some great tips here, and especially useful if you’re delving into a new length or genre. Certain aspects of storytelling transcend the form.

  1. For those of us struggling with the grueling nuts and bolts of moving a story forward, these 15 seconds are just a brilliant, helpful reminder of why we’re struggling in the first place:

“The point of art is to move an inchoate, irreducible emotional sensation from the head and heart of a creator into the head and heart of an audience.”

The grind of the work makes it so easy to forget why we do this in the first place. So helpful, a waking thought to inspire us every day. Thanks for this!
